The Custom Building Process
Building a custom home or an addition to an existing residence can be a daunting process. There are no models to select from, for example, as there are in most new housing developments. Instead, clients are asked to interpret spatial relationships from architectural drawings – something with which most people have had little or no experience.
This is why I encourage my clients to visit the site while the house is being framed and, within appropriate safety constraints, watch as it is taking shape. When the outlines of the rooms, windows and doors are placed on the floor, the lines of the drawings are transformed into visual reality. The window location that looked perfect on the drawing may actually be in the wrong location for a piece of furniture. A room that appeared to be the ideal size is now the wrong size, and a ceiling that was designed to be flat, would add considerable flair to a room if it were made into a cathedral ceiling.
By making these changes at an early stage of the process, I can ensure that the home will reflect the client’s tastes and living preferences – and that it will be unique to them and not exactly like their neighbor’s home next door. As part of Our Philosophy, because our relationship is more important to me than extra profits, I can also accommodate these changes at reasonable costs, as several of my satisfied clients can attest.
